Petrichor

Finally it is raining in Gurgaon. After the showers on June 30th, which I thought was the onset of monsoons and expecting that it would rain regularly, nothing like that happened. Rains ditched us. It has been hot and humid ever since. Today, 16th July at about one in the afternoon the first showers landed after a strong breeze. The morning had been sunny and clear. Look at the picture of the blue sky and the cloud just a couple of hours back, there wasn’t an iota of hint that we will get rain. It’s another thing that it has been pouring in Delhi but not in these parts.

Finally, that heady smell has hit my nostrils. Here on the terrace, when the raindrops hit the red sandstone, Petrichor is not the same as when the rains land on dry soil. Nonetheless, it is equally intoxicating and reminds me of many ghazals and popular Hindi songs.

Monsoons 2022 – June 30

It is pleasant and cool outside. The Monsoons have set in over Gurgaon and Delhi today. June the 30th is the scheduled day for rains to arrive and they did this morning about 5.30. As of now these are light showers. Cool breeze, gray skies and no sun. Wet red stone on the terrace looks awesome. The upper portion of dried amaltas looks rather sad but fresh green leaves have started sprouting from the soil level and also in the middle of the tree. Hopefully by the end of this monsoon we should get to see the green cover on this too. Madhu-Malti is loaded with pink-white and red flowers and there are other bushes of flowers too. Chandni and raat ki rani are blooming too. At 10 am, it is pouring now, no wind so it is falling down straight and sharp. At 11 there is thunder and I see denser clouds now. The rains saved me the effort of water the plants today.
